Engine & Gearbox

7 February 2015

I made a start on the engine. I hauled it up onto the workbench in my garage.
After soaking the exhaust manifold nuts with Penetrating oil, all this week, i managed to undo them all, and take off both intake & exhaust manifold.
I have removed the clutch (6 bolts). I am renewing the clutch as a matter of course.
Also, the flywheel is coming off, i have loosened the bolts, but keeping it on so i can lock the engine easily, to enable the front fan retaining nut to be undone.

Removing the engine mount bolts

As with many nuts and bolts previously, the Fan bolt is seized solid. I need a 14mm thin wall socket, as access is very tight, Halfords tomorrow morning then.

Engine stripped. Fan, flywheel & clutch off. I whisked the motor up to Ernie of Vixenracing in Morecambe, who will strip, renew & rebuild, along with new barrels and uprated pistons, and modified cylinder head. This should guarantee reliability and a bit of extra zip.

Next job is to tackle the gearbox..

21 March    I had a choice of 2 Gearboxes, one from the original 2CV, and another i bought as a spare. The spare looks the better option, so i'll clean it up & get it ready.

The brake callipers & wheel discs come off easily. I shall refurbish these this week.
As with the clutch, i shall use new parts.. Pads, & all new cables for the handbrake.

15/6/201     Waiting for some spares from Ecas, then i will fit the petrol tank, Gearbox & drive shafts. Then i will move on to fitting the Bonapart brake line kit, followed by the floor. The Engine should be back from Ernie very soon too.

Gearbox degreased with white spirit, then, cleaned up  with brass rotary wire brushes.

Rear Gearbox mount bent by 11˚ as per manual.
Also note extra spacer to gain clearance for steering arm bolts.

Gearbox fitted with temporary bolts.

Engine done!
